Nestled along Jalan Utama Alor Setar-Sungai Petani in the heart of Kampung Baharu, Gurun, Thain Hoe Restaurant stands as a cherished destination for authentic Chinese zhuchar cuisine. Proudly serving hearty, home-style dishes that have captivated locals and visitors alike, this gem delivers a genuine taste of tradition with every bite.
The star of the menu includes the sensational Broad Rice Noodle steamed with Fish Fillet, boasting tender, flaky fish nestled atop silky noodles that soak up the delicate flavors of the sauce. Equally enticing is the Deep-fried Beancurd with Chilli Sauce, a crispy, golden delight balanced perfectly by a tangy, spicy kick — a combination that tantalizes your palate and keeps you coming back for more.
Guests consistently praise the restaurant for its generous portions and budget-friendly prices, making it a standout choice for those craving genuine Chinese comfort food without the pretension. The chef’s personal recipes bring a distinct “old school wok hei” essence, infusing dishes with that signature smoky aroma and layered flavors that speak to years of culinary passion.
While the cozy dining area can feel intimate due to limited seating, this actually preserves the quality and freshness of every plate served. The slight wait is a small price to pay for freshly cooked meals crafted with care. The welcoming and friendly owner ensures attentive service, which complements the warm, traditional atmosphere and homemade drinks that round out the experience.
Located just off the main road near Gunung Jerai, the restaurant is easy to find and offers ample parking right out front — perfect for travelers exploring the Kedah region. Note: A quick encouragement to the restaurant’s team: addressing the minor issue with flies will elevate the overall dining comfort, ensuring an even more pleasant experience for all guests.

Both the Broad Rice Noodle steamed with Fish fillet and deep-fried beancurd with chilli sauce were good. But they need to do something about the flies.

Best Chinese zhucha restaurant this side of Gurun - great taste, good portions and decent pricing. Limited seating space, but since each dish is freshly prepared if there were more there would certainly be a long wait. Food is well prepared and has that old school wok hei, with homemade drinks and traditional feel. Just off the main road down from Gunung Jerai. Plenty of parking out front, but don't expect aircon or anything fancy. The servers are kindly uncles and aunties that are fairly amicable. For five dishes with grouper fish the total came to around RM30 per person, which is perfectly reasonable.
